I do not think there is something wrong when communicating informally with clients. As long as I am close to them and was able to build a good business relationship with them. But then, we still need to continue being formal when it comes to writing them.

There is nothing wrong in been informally in a business setting. But there is need to know the limits also. Everything should have balance whether in business or private affairs.
There's nothing wrong with being informal that's the truth.
It is totally wrong to communicate in formally in the business environment. You need to communicate officially because you are in an official environment.
The most important thing here is the kind of relationship you have with the client. There are some clients i do not even ask them questions about their family or anything else. While there are some we are so close to the point where we even mock each other with jokes and can easily tell each other our secrets.
I do not see any problem having informal communication in a business setting as long as it is within limits. Informal communication may help to ease tension and build relationship.
