Most big companies today have branches in different places within a state and some even have outside the state and even outside the country in general. When it comes to how long it should take before starting up branches for your business, I believe it totally depends on the business owner. It mainly depends on if you have the mental and financial capacity to manage and run these businesses. Once your business has grown to the point where it can function perfectly well even without your presence, then you can focus on having other branches.

I have seen a person who started his business and in right months time he is already working on building a branch and the business is actually doing well. The most important thing is having the capital and good management.
A business can expand if it is financially stable. They can merge with other companies if the business is not ready to have sister branches. Another thing is that if the company establishes its popularity, it can add to its idea of business expansion. It is a part of growing and progressing to greater heights.
I think there is no regular pattern. If you feel that your business has grown to a certain point and you are ready to expand your business, it's time to open a branch.
