I think a child can take care of himself/herself at the age of 16. That said, s(he) may still need assistance or support from parents from time to time.

While all the opinions here are very valid and correct. In African culture, if you don't break free by yourself, it would suddenly dawn on you that you are 35 and still dependent on your parents because our parents don't get tired of taking care of us.
I feel parents should stop taking care of a child once the child starts to earn some money for him or herself. Some people are lucky to start earning on time while some people are not very lucky
