Sacking all the staff and asking them to reapply- Is it a good business move?

An organisation I once worked for sacked all the staff and told everyone to reapply. I and one other staff were the only ones that were re-employed from the previous batch.

Do you think that was a perfect business move or a bad one?

When there is too much infighting between staff, the best thing is to sack everyone and investigate subtly so you know which of the staff to keep.
This is exactly what happened in the same organisation that it happened. Staff were using police to arrest each other. The management had to sack every staff.

I've seen this practice in the retail, especially when it comes to mid-management positions. When they have to make cuts, instead of laying off a certain number of people, they'll lay off everyone (in that particular role) and provide them with an opportunity to apply for a new position. That new position is typically the same role as before, but with a new title, and there are a lot less open positions.

I think it makes sense, they way they won't make the mistake of sacking the right person. It also gives everyone an equal chance to prove themselves.
