I have a colleague whose brother-in-law owns 3 cranes and they make big money because we all know how popular cranes are for different work and they get work daily and have hired 3-4 people so they make good profits every month.

A crane is a multi-purpose machine and can be money spinning if you have steady jobs. A crane is not cheap. It can cost thousands of dollars. Moreover, it is not easy to maintain and manage. Therefore, it is a business for the wealthy and rich. Before starting the business, you must have some capital to set aside for unforeseen expenses.
If you own a crane, any road construction or major house construction, just know that you would be making your money. It is a good business. But buying a crane ain't beans.
Owning a crane is a good business, most of these people who usually use crane for one work or the other usually hire it and they cost a lot. If you have the money to buy it, you would definitely make good profits from it.
A crane is a high end engineering device that is used in road construction. Renting it out could be pretty lucrative.
If you do really have a means of getting that kind of equipment and put it out for hire, I believe that it is something that will be able to fetch you a lot of money especially if there are a lot of construction companies around to hire from you.

I have heard from one of my colleagues whose brother in law owns 1-2 cranes and they are earning money by renting these at per hour basis
If you have the means to acquire a crane, you could consider renting it out for short- or long-term periods. This could be a great way to generate additional income.
A crane is very much needed for construction and many construction engineers would rather rent it because it is expensive to buy one.
