Its not really a waste of money, there are some persons that would not be willing to be partners or support you the fullest until they are comfortable with you. Inviting them over for dinner would he a great way to create these bond.
I like to have lunch or dinner with business partners, but with the note that there is no discussion about work, only to make business partners familiar, casual chats, in order to further increase comfort and a sense of solidarity with one another.

I think that some companies have limitations with this kind of business meeting. But, it is more prevalent to spend money for VIP customers.
