I have been wondering what happens to prison inmates that get to die while serving a sentence. Do they get buried by the government or their bodies are released to their families for proper burial?

That's inhuman mate, in the Philippines, no. The government respects the feelings of the family. At least they can view for the last time.
Well, I don't know why ours is different. But I think the relatives would be informed to be present as the funeral is being conducted.

I read somewhere that the bodies of some prison inmates are donated for medical research if they die while serving a term.
I am not sure how the body of the deceased will be handled here. But I assume that the family will be notified, and the body handed to them for the last rites.
When a person is convicted, they become government property. And the government decides what to do with their bodies when they die.
