Do you believe in "not sparing the rod" when disciplining children?

My dad used a ruler to beat my hands if I were out of line. But he never hit my head or hurt my body. I think some kind of disciplinary action should be taken if the child makes a mistake.
I am not against caning a child consciously with love. Even though I can't do it, my wife would hopefully be the one to be doing that. When it is done with love, it is a very effective way of disciplining a child.
There are many endearing ways to discipline both kids and pets where the rod has no place.
Could you do well to mention those ways to discipline a child without using the rod. We are here to learn. If you are making comments like this, please try to include details so others can learn.
I'm not sure if this practice is still allowed here. Children can report it, as it may be considered abusive. Parents can communicate with their children kindly, especially since using a stick or rod for discipline is prohibited.
