A lot of businesses join Chambers of Commerce or other Trade Associations for social networking purposes. As a freelancer working in translation, I've also joined Hong Kong Translation Society to get to know the people in this profession. I attend seminars and workshops organized by the Society to enhance my translation skills.

Since some Ponzi schemes start to use networking to scam people in Nigeria, to use the word networking is to invite trouble from those who have been scammed by ponzi scheme networking scammers. Nigerians are skeptical of anything that have to do with networking.
