In my personal opinion is to maintain or sustain what being followed through the rules embedded in the site. That includes the reward system and the like.

Sure I have even seen the changes here on this site. The contest have forced a lot of people to join and remain active too

Some of the ways you can use to retain users is by making sure the site is user friendly, easy to navigate and loads relatively fast. If your site does not have these qualities, I am sure you will find it difficult to maintain and retain the users

The admins simply needs to be creative, generating new ways to gain the attention of the members. For example what's happening on the forum right.now, this would motivate members to put in more efforts.

To retain members in your site, you have to pay them reasonably well. The interface of the site must be user friendly, easy to navigate. Always let members know how you try to grow the site to gain their confidence. Admin should not be rude and if certain posts are banned, explain the reasons.
