Personally I would prefer a paid hosted domain, because I believe the free ones are limited.but you can never go wrong with paid ones.

It depends on the purpose and scale of the website. For personal blogs or small websites, free hosted domains are fine. But for bigger businesses and ecommerce sites, paid hosted domains are a better option due to the security, reliability, and scalability they offer.

I much prefer a paid-hosted domain when it comes to certain websites that I run. I have in the past though used free hosted domains for sites that I create just as a hobby and not for any kind of monetization purpose. Having a paid-hosted domain name helps when it comes to monetization so I will always go that route when it comes to sites I plan to monetize.

You can get free domain on freenom. It will be extension .tk or .ml. Not popular but top domain. Mostly free domains are actually subdomains. Subdomains look like subdomainname.maindomainname.com example (yoursite.weebly.com)

I don't use free domain names anymore, but back when I was just starting out and didn't have much money, I used a dot tk domain name. I don't think Freenom is around anymore, last I checked their site was no longer offering free domain names. You can get a free subdomain name however, and some hosts offer a free domain name once you sign up for a hosting account. I wouldn't trust a site that used a Freenom domain name, if they were still around.

Site is still online. I did not use this service for longer time but I will check is my account still active. To bad if it don't give anymore service since it was great for beginers like me.

It is true self hosted website are very easy to monetised than a free hosted website that are with limitations.
