You can build forums through different methods, one, free hosted forums, two open source forum scripts, and three, premium forum scripts. While you don't have control over free hosted forums, you can easily create nice forums through open-source forum scripts. Now, back to the original question, do you really have to use a paid forum script?

Depend what option you want have. If you just want moderate, add points, add roles you can choose free forum script. I can post PTP forum using Wordpress and plugins complete for free. Paid scripts allow payment systems, affiliate programs, maybe refferal system.

You did not understand what I was trying to say, did you? I was referring to the program that you can use to build forums, blogs or any kind of websites. My question was whether it is necessary to use premium script or use a free script.
As someone who has used both free and paid forum scripts, I can say that you do not need to use a paid forum script and you can succeed just as well using a free forum script.
It all depends on what you want to use yourself and whether you have the budget to use paid for or whether free would be better for your budget.
