Many companies maintain a sports team like cricket or football or hockey and these participate against each other in different tournaments and this way they build their business and make it popular.
We have basketball and volleyball here. The company make sure that these sports are part of employees engagement. This is to promote friendship and bond among the employees.
The company i used to work with before was a small company, they did not really have that much capital to handle things like this. And we had no real interest in sports.
