Promotion and advertisement of events is very important and crucial to the success of such an event as if there is no promotion for it, be sure to know that it would be very hard to get to the ears of people who are supposed to be the targets for attendance.
When I was working full time, our company participated in trade shows twice a year. We sent out invitation to target audience inviting them to attend our booth. We also post the details of the trade show on the company webpage.
Absolutely correct, there's no other way rather than the above mentioned, because we humans tend to remember pictures or anything shown in pictures easily, and those things tend to stick to our memory for a very long period of time.

Aa far as the event is open to the general public, you would have to promote it one way of the other depending on the target audience. You can use traditional promotion methods or Social media to promote your events depending on who you target to reach.
Any business event like symposium, seminars and expos have to be properly promoted. You can use radio adverts and social media adverts to make sure your event is well publicized.
