How Do You Build an Email List?

If you want to do email marketing, you need an email list. If you are doing email marketing for the first time, you will have to start with zero subscribers. So, how do you build email list, I mean how did you build your list if you already have an email list? I started with contact forms and later started running ads on social sites for building subscribers.

I tried using Facebook ads to get subscribers for my blog, but it failed.
What I've seen people do and claim that it worked, is to give out freebies that lure users. It works sometimes, but you may need to keep on baiting those who aren't really interested.

I had idea making crawler to collect public email address from specific websites and then send mass emails. It would be more blackhat method than whitehat but emails are public so everybody can send them message.

This will work for almost all businesses that are online. The key is finding out what you can give out for free, possibly by creating it yourself which your audience will love. I'm sure you have subscribed to a newsletter once in exchange for your email address.
