Another tip I would also say is to ensure that your content is unique as well. If someone comes to your site and see's content they have seen before, they are not going to want to stick around at all.
People will only visit your site to find the solution to the problem that got them there in the first place won't care about how well designed it is. Search engines also care about how to improve user experience, hence they will penalize you if your content is lacking.
