As for me I can see ads banner being shown. More specifically, two ads while I'm writing this reply.

We do have a couple of ads. But they are not prominent.

I'm still testing a few out. Ultimately, I would like to get on Adsense. But right now there are too many fraudulent clicks and I'm concerned it would get my account banned.

Right now the site isn't generating any income. All expenses are being paid out of pocket.

Did you try Adzoc ad network? Payout is only 2$ and you could generate easily such income.
