Proboards forums - free or paid?

The problem before buying hosting and upgrade services and buying a domain name you have to reach a high number of users and interactions so for a community of 10 members that half of them don't have posts and this is why people avoid paying money for upgrades. If you have 1000 users with 75 active members or 4000 users with 300 active members then we could discuss upgrade and buying the domain name. In this stage, monetization will be easy.

But, is it better? That you have not mentioned here.
It is better to be familiar with platform and also to grow up your community a little before passing to a web hosting means limited duration while the forum grows up.

I agree with you and for this reason only, so far, I never opted for upgradation on any sites.
This is just for basic use you need to set up a forum and monetize not for advanced use.
