Referral Contests to Drive Advertising and Registrations

Do you think that running referral contests on a site is a good way to drive people to advertise a particular site? If you could, explain your thought behind why it is good or bad to participate in one.

I think it is one of those things that if people really like the site they are on, it could really help bring new users and traffic to the site, during those times that a site may need it. But then again, not everyone can easily get referrals, which is the annoying part of trying to bring in referrals for a contest.

This has been working for many sites and a lot of site admins have adopted this means of driving traffic. So it is a worthwhile avenue to drive traffic and bring users to a site.

There must be a lot of control on referral contest because if you say referral contest means there is a lot of cheating for obtaining the referrals from members to falsify count result.

Everybody must not be a winner in a contest. That is the reason it is called contest. Some will earn more and some will go without any price, that is what makes it a contest.
Referral contest can boost traffic in a site relatively fast. But one disadvantage of referrals is that it can be easily manipulated.

Yes it is a good way by which the site get new visitors and users if you want more people to your site you can start with a ref contest whether paid or not.

But it's not a surety that all those who join through referral are going to be active participants later or are going to be valuable contributors. I am not good at getting referrals. And the two that I managed to get for another forum site did not continue there.

Well every good thing comes with its bad side. I agree with you that a lot of referrals from the contest hardly stays like those that found the earning sites themselves

On the site that I currently co-own, we offer small incentives for people who refer people to the forum. Most people who refer people to the forum are the ones that believe in what we offer and believe that with enough help we can be an amazing platform to help content creators all over.

I do believe that if you offer some kind of incentive, doesn't even have to be money related but may be related to the forum currency that they can use to purchase upgrades it helps a lot, especially if they believe in your forum and want to see you succeed!

It's a good way to get some promotion and traffic to begin with. But it might not be a good option for the site in long run. So, they shut it down after a while when they have got enough users and traffic.
RIF keeps coming up with different kinds of contests and rewards offers from time to time. I think that keeps the users excited and interested in the site.

Bmf did ran a lot of Referral contests already and got so many users with that and other than that they are always doing something to promote their website through different means like on Youtube and other websites like trust pilot

I don't see too much benefit in this kind of marketing tactic because the people who join your site through referral links might not be active on the site, they might even have received incentives to join the site.

Yes this would definitely help, people tend to get motivated when they know there is money involved. Creating a referral contest would not only ignite their passion to work hard.
