I believe it can definitely assist in gaining traffic. When I ran my last forum, I gained over 300+ new members by advertising on social media. If you conduct your marketing in a good way, I'm sure you can gain a ton of traffic.
I remember those days, man they were so good.
Social media sites is the pool of traffic if you know how to target them.
I have seen that Facebook is blocking WordPress and blogger links after being shared by some users because they need you to pay for advertisements.
Probably spammers. You can't just post your link into any group in comments. It was probably reported by admin. You must build your group or page.

Of course, whether it will work wonders or not, I have to try and see.
It could work but hardly so for 1000 social media shares you grab 50 visitors or even less so it requires a lot of sharing from people to target a huge audience.
Or even decrease because most of followers doesn't like advertisements on their timewall unfortenally.
I believe that it can definitely help. It really works.
The problem isn't about reader itself the problem social media aren't paying employees and hosting and ad cost for you place your ad for free so many adverts are ghosted by Facebook they have to pay money for ad being displayed on Facebook.
One thing with Facebook is that they reject websites with pop up or pop under ads. Any ads that redirect users to another website or app is rejected by Facebook. You can also direct Facebook ads to your other social media account.
