People love to talk about themselves, so it seems to reason that they would be delighted to do so. This strategy could be a good approach to get through small talk if you have a good and patient listener. We just need to be more flexible in dealing with different sets of people.

Personal introduction takes important role in starting a conversation. You need to first introduce yourself before you can command good listenership. And one thing in Africa is that if you don't blow your trumpet, no one will blow it for you. That is, you don't expect a third party to start introduce you when you are not a dumb.
