You don't necessarily need to go to college but it's best you find an accomplished video director you can learn from. Having a good video editing skills is good too.

In order to have a successful career as a video director, you need to have a good eye for visuals, an understanding of the technical aspects of video production, excellent communication and leadership skills, and strong organizational skills. You should also have an understanding of the creative process and be able to come up with creative ideas and solutions. Additionally, it is important to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in video production and be able to adapt to new technology. Finally, having a good network of contacts in the industry is essential for staying ahead of the competition.
