I see almost artistes be having managers. What do these managers manage? Is it that the artiste cannot manage himself/ herself. Why do artistes really need a manager?

They need managers, as setting things up can be full time jobs alone. Imagine trying to be an artist, and trying to get stuff set up, and not actually doing your job as an artist. That is the reason.

In most cases, these artist are extremely busy meeting up with public appearances and all that, they need someone to help organize their activities. It is the manager who helps them review their contract and even find suitable contracts and deal they can work with. In other words the manager is in charge of the paper works.
From my observation it is very obvious that artist always have a very tight schedule which makes it very difficult for them to attend to every other thing that comes to their table and the reason why they need to have a manager to take care of those things.
Artists are celebrities that have busy schedules. Though not all artists have tight schedule because not all artists are successful. Successful artists want to have private time to concentrate on production of music. Creative needs some moment of concentration without distractions.
An artist manager has a wide range of responsibilities. They include negotiating contracts on behalf of the artist; identify opportunities for exposure in media such as television, radio, magazines, and newspapers; take care of the public image of the artist.
It is a very wonderful point because they help the artist to get shows and they use their influence to promote the artist to different countries. In Nigeria, there are so many artists that have been promoted and have traveled to different countries to anchor shows.

Yes, I have seen comments that say they need managers to manage contracts, schedules and others. Artists cannot transact on their some would do that because they need contracts or they need someone to sign for them. It is important for them that someone is doing the talks for their careers sake.
