Which do you believe is more crucial for a business meeting—the opening or the closing?
I must say that both of them are essential in having a business meeting. It will not be complete without opening and closing the business meeting. The complete structures can achieve the business meeting agendas.
I think both are important. When opening a meeting, the chairperson should make the purpose of the meeting clear, and be specific about the purpose of each agenda item. In closing the meeting, the chairperson should summarize the discussion during the meeting and identify the follow up actions.
I think people will remember the closing statement more than the opening statement. However, it is also true that if you have a good opening statement, people will be more attentive.
In the closing part, other maters will be discussed and this is the most crucial part if there are discussions about conflict, performance and evaluation results.
Both are extremely important, how you start the meeting, how you approach the issues at hand would determine if you are to get a positive result or not. The ending also plays an equal role. How you end things with your staff during the meeting would determine if they okay with the outcome or not.
