It's becoming increasingly difficult to get good domain names that are cheap enough to be bought by newbies in the field.

While some extensions like .com are more favoured and some like .gov can only be used by certain institutions making them more expensive, I think the influx of people into domain flipping is another factor that has contributed to making domain names more expensive.

There are only a limited number of domains of some types and the increased demand for these domains has resulted in a higher price. For examples llll.com domains are usually being sold for $200 or more for each domain

Domains are expensive but you will only pay once a year. My nephew bought a domain for his blog at $135 a year but he earns 4 figures a month.

Dot com is cheap, you can get it for less than $10. Dot net is also cheap. However, there are a lot of domains that cost you hundreds of dollars for registration. Domains are the products of the company that release them and they price the domains according to their own pricing strategy.

Some domain names are more expensive than others because they are premium domain names. Premium domain names are usually shorter and easier to remember than others and that's why they're more expensive than others.

Some domain names are more expensive due to being short, brandable words that are easy to remember and type. Additionally, domains relating to high commercial value industries like finance, insurance, and real estate fetch higher sales prices. Domains with existing levels of traffic, revenue streams, or linking equity also justify premium valuations for their enhanced monetization potential. Overall utility and demand drives pricing.
