Why is the cost of rent very expensive in UK?

My cousin in UK pays £500 pounds for rent in the Uk and according to him, this is for a run down place.

My question is,
Why is rent so expensive in the UK? Everyone I know that went there are finding it difficult to afford a place to live. I would like to understand the reasons behind the high costs.

According to me the amount of the house rent depends on the location, the economic level of the area among other factors. I think UK is very developed and rich country for that matter.
