I used to get at least 5 strokes of cane when I mess up as a kid.

Damn, that's too much for a kid.
You should have used the word "beat" because "flog" or "flogging" is too harsh a word to use in this context, and no mother will do that ever.

It's always going to be when you're a kid that your parents would flog you. I was stubborn when I was a kid and I got flogged a lot.
Fortunately, my mother was very patient with me. When I was naughty as a kid, she talked to me and gave me her advice.

Our African parents are not that patient with us when we are growing up because they believe that we need a firm hand.
My dad used to beat my hand when I did not do my homework, refused to take medicine when getting sick, and didn't get up on time to go to school.
I know for sure that I would not be flogging my children. I have never believed that to be a good way to discipline.
