Most of the owners of such business have worked for the relevant industry for quite some time. They have all the connections with suppliers and buyers. They normally get new customers from referral.
Okay, that means they have been in the business for a long time. Of course it will be easier for them to get connections with people are readily to patronize them.
The old saying tells how to succed in business, "Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise".
Definitely, advertising plays a crucial role in growing a business but its not the only way. Word of mouth, excellent customer service and a strong brand image can also drive business growth without advertisements.
If the business is small like a small store, then there is no need for it to be advertised. After some months people can familiarize the small store and become their permanent store if the service is satisfactory.There is a tendency to make that store big.
It really depends on the business you are running, many small businesses, especially roadside traders, or open food/coffee stalls, grocery stores without advertising. They don't implement a marketing strategy, but they believe in the quality of the products they sell and strategic locations.
Whether it is organically or through paid ads, a business cannot strive without marketing, it is just essential for a business to spend about 30 per cent of its profits towards marketing so that more revenue is brought in. At times you can start with a word of mouth marketing to the targetted and right audience who have can become potential leads and eventually, you will close deals.
Definitely, one of the things that will make a new business to survive is constant advertisement. Without that there is no way people will know about them.

Well you may be right. But there are many business that don't need advertisement and they will still be successful.
It is only small businesses located in streets that does not need advertisement. But big businesses that wants to go far should always advertise.
A business can survive without advertising. Adverts can come in diverse forms. Quality products and services can be still be advert in another form. If a product is excellent, people can tell others or refer others to your business.
it depends on the kind of business you are running. There are some businesses that cannot thrive without advertisements. You need to let people know about your business.
