Criminal Charges and Politicians Stepping Down

If criminal charges are brought against a politician, should that politician step down? Even if he is innocent and clearly the victim of a smear campaign?

I think it would relate to what the charges are, even if the person is innocent.

In Nigeria, politicians don't resign for whatever reason. Even if they are find quilty or there is enough evidence against them, they will not resign because politics is Nigeria is business.

In Africa, politicians do not don't resign irrespective of crimes they must have committed, they would never want to resign.

Some charges lodged at politicians are political vendetta filed by opponents. Mere charges unless proven beyond reasonable doubt should not cause the politician to step down.
