Yes, it's a good habit that many people here usually do. But that's not mandatory, the most important thing is to give the best congratulations and prayers. Sometimes things like this are more memorable than just giving material gifts. In my former workplace and my country in general, any staff that has a wedding, child dedication and other forms of celebration would get gift from his colleagues at work collectively. Yes, I understand, because that's what a lot of people here do too. But it's true that not everyone gives something, sometimes they just come and give the best congratulations and prayers, and that's okay, because it's not mandatory. But some people will feel embarrassed and choose not to come, if they don't have something to bring. Pity. The thing is that it isn't mandatory, just a good thing that many people usually do. you just have to show appreciation for the little things the other person is doing
You find something and do so that your colleagues can contribute for you. Even if it is birthday, celebrate so you can get your own share of the contribution. It is a a culture in most workplaces in my country. Even though many people would be contributing for other people's celebrations and they don't ever have a celebration for his or her colleagues to contribute to.

In some organizations in Nigeria, they would just take the agreed fixed amount for celebrations deduction from to your salary. No stress. It actually depends on how close that I am with the co worker that's having a celebration. It can be a birthday celebration or any other thing. If I'm close to the person, I will contribute.
It is my first time to hear that giving gifts to a company is a mandatory. In my country, it is not an obligatory thing to do for the employees. It is a voluntary act to do.It is mandatory in most companies or organizations. In the company, I worked , it is a must. They simply deduct the money from your salary. Workers are not giving the privilege to determine whether they will contribute or not.
