I am speaking for the people who are in sales. They do not need to prepare at all times because they know their market and features of their products or services. No matter how the negotiation goes, they know how to handle the queries that their target clients would ask.
Has there ever been a situation where you had little preparation and nevertheless managed to succeed completely?

I cannot think of a situation where I had little preparation and managed to succeed. As I am doing translation, I always need to work hard on a job assigned to me. I always try my best so that my client is satisfied with my work.
I am not in sales, but it happened when I was in college working on my thesis. It was an individual thesis, so it was difficult for me. My data was somewhat incomplete, but I was able to succeed. My thesis defense earned me a B.
I am in sales and to improve upon your sales you need to carry out marketing campaign and also dish out good customer service to clients.
I have experienced this on several occasions, as at last month i have never designed valentine card or any kind of card before, someone suddenly came to me that she needed a card design that very day. I was not prepared but I didn't want to turn the job down. Within few hours i had to figure out all i need to do. In the end i was able to scale through.
It is not impossible but it shouldn't be an established lifestyle because that kind of success is dependent on circumstances and it is not good.
I have intentionally made it part of me that anything I enter into, I must prepare adequately for it. I have had instances of success without much preparation but I don't want to build my life on the template of luck.
