How can one asked for a promotion at the workplace

Yes, I totally agree with you. As far as I know promotions are only given by superiors to subordinates who have satisfactory work performance. So, work well, that you may earn a good reputation. At least the boss won't fire you because you are a good worker, and he will make you an offer either a raise or a promotion.

I think an employee have right to ask for promotion if he sensed that he deserve it. The best way to ask for promotion is to put in writing and also state categorically the reason you deserve promotion. This approach work in developed countries where there is availability of jobs. In developing countries, that request may even result in receiving a sack letter.

I don't think it is the right thing for you to do when it comes to asking for a promotion at your workplace because I believe that the company has a structure with which they promote their workers.

I don't think employees usually ask for promotion in a business environment. you are promoted based on the level of your work.
