When you are selling your services, how do you price them? How do you determine how much should you charge? As far as I am concerned, my charges are based on my competitors' rates as well as the amount of time I need to spend while working on the service. My service prices are always less than my competitors' prices.

This is exactly the same way I go about pricing my services as well because I will always like to maintain a close pricing range with what my competitors offer in the market.

I've never been the kind of seller that will short sell a service in order to get more sales because that is just destroying the market.

Yes I totally agree with you. When you want to make a price, try not to differ too much from the prices of competitors on the market. If possible, be cheaper than the market price.

I think this is a good way of handling how to provide service for people but I am naive when it comes to that

I currently offer translation service offline. The service fee I ask for is the market rate, that is what most competitors are charging, and the time I need to spend on doing the translation. I try to compete on my service and my skills instead of price.

I play piano part time and when I am invited to come play, I look at the duration of the program I am playing at. Also, I look at the level of diligence I would have to put in depending on the audience.

It depends on the competitor's price and charges should be like they should not be too low that you don't earn anything from it or they should not be so high that people don't avail them.

Do you really look at competition before you fix your price? I know of a barbing saloon that charges #300 and another one close by that charges #1000. Why are there not considering their respective prices as competitors?

I think based on your analogy, one should also consider the calss at which he is delivering the service to fix his price.

I also think environmental plays a major part in how you fix your price. Generally, a high brow area attracts more cost in terms of rent and this is captured in the price of the service.

I usually price my service based on what the standard service fee in my city. Sometimes I check the other colleagues what would be the best price of a particular professional service.

The best way to price your services is to use your competitors price as a parameter. It is better than your price is below the your competitors price . The only thing to increase your price is when you have large customer base who value your service more than your competitors.

One needs to base the price on the market rate, that is about what other competitors are charging, you should price your business to be competitive with others to lure customers

What if your own cost of production doesn't permits you to sell at general price level? Would you take the loss and still sell at general market price?

Normally business people would calculate the cost of production and add a reasonable profit and come up with your price based on the competitors prices too and ensuring that it does not have a bigger difference.

This is why you should try and produce at a cheaper price or you go to where there are selling for less . this is why it is good to do a good research before you start any business

I always do my calculations on the cost of rendering the services and compare to the existing service providers (competitors) and set my reasonable prices in line with them.

You might be right in a way. I also think the level of quality is used to fix the price. I can't fix a shop with AC and you expect me to charge you what my competitors are charging with fans.
