I've actually seen something similar like this happen in my neighborhood where kids will go to rich man's house to sing for them and expect some tips in return which they always get.Over hear all the carols i have heard so far are from 9 lessons and carols programs held in churches, i have not seen any kid using this as a way to earn extra capital.

We were more active than young ones nowadays. Here kids form a group of 2-3 members. They go house to house to sing carol and ask for Christmas present or money.
