I do agree with you. Having rare skills is the best way to land to a better job, either online or offline. That's the reason why some people aspire to have their masters degrees or doctorate degrees. The reason is to be more competitive against their competitors.
The key question is, How esay is it to replace you? If it is so easy, they would pay you anything. If it's not so easy, you would be paid whatever price you fix.
Yes, I totally agree with you, the rarer a skill, the fewer competitors, the more people who need the skill, the more and easier it will be to get money. One skill that is considered rare is the skill to build a business, when most people are oriented to work for a company, their orientation is to create a company.

Another dimension is not just having a rare skill, it is anyone being able to do it like you. @Niyi Briggs has said something like that. The guy that plays piano in my church, no one can do it like him and he is paid very well.
I agree with you that people with rare skills can find work and earn money so easily like artists, musicians, ballet dancers, models, carvers, and more . They have talents and skills that will lead them to earn big.

We can acquire skills and talents but those having rare talents can do well. It might be an innate talent. They are called gifted people. We also have hidden talents that need to be shared to be known and hired for a job fitted to us.
