In the United States, an employer cannot ask a job applicant certain questions. These include questions about a person’s religion, date of birth (except to establish a minimum age requirement), nationality, marital status, physical or mental disabilities, and private organizations the person belongs to. Do similar laws exist in your country? What do you think of these laws? Are they a good idea? Do they protect people who are looking for a job?

To the best of my knowledge, there are no laws in our country regarding this matter. However, I have been asked some personal questions to a limited extent during job interviews. As long as these questions do not affect our self-esteem, they can be acceptable.

This law does not exist or at least not that i am aware of. Even if it does exist, then it is safe to say no one is following these laws.

In my location, before the job interview, the applicant has to let the interviewer check his/her HKID card which includes information such as date of birth and nationality. It is illegal to hire a person without a HKID card. Other than that, the interviewer will not ask question about the religion, martial status of the applicant.

These information are not bad if tour employer should be aware from my point of view. Like that marital status, it could be important to know so that they can know the kind of job role you are assigned. Especially for ladies.

For decency matter, it is not allowed to ask something that is not related to the job position being applied. It will cause awkward feeling and might offend the applicant.

I think potential employers should focus more on the capability of the potential staff to do the job rather than personal life. It is not important for the job at hand.

We don't have any law here which says that an employee can't be asked such personal questions in a job interview but that's fine they should avoid asking such questions which are not relevant and are not helpful to know about a candidate.

I don't think those questions are really that personal. Take for instance, physical health. I personally am asthmatic and if I happen to apply to an organization and they get to know that, they would know that I don't have to work around dust.
