Small shops have their own target market while supermarkets also have theirs. And I believe there is no really negative effects of supermarkets on small shops.
The thing that I find a little straining about business is that it demands a person to take responsibility all by himself or herself as the business owner.
Flooding used to be a big concern to me because my shop was located in an area that was easily flooded. But luckily, the government of my country has fixed the road and provided proper drainage.
I don't think there is any other path to build finances for your business as a sole entrepreneur than having to work and save from your personal funds.
