A calorie deficit can be effective. Many fitness experts recommend it. I have tried it before and successfully lost some weight. I also tried the Keto diet but had to stop immediately due to a family history of hypertension.

There are some people who will reduce the way they eat and still not get to keep it so you need to ask your doctor what is good for you or for your health

We gain weight when we eat more than our body require. Therefore, if you want to lose weight, you will have to eat as much calorie that your body needs.
