The accountability part is really the problem. Some family members will even think he or she is doing you a favor. So holding them now might be a problem.

There are family member who can agree to work for free? Wow. I have never come across that. If it's like that then I am guessing it would be extra hard to work with a family member since they would have nothing to lose if they decided to just up and quit

There are many reputable family businesses all over the world that are profitable. The issue depends on the individuals. I'll personally prefer to run business on my own.

It depends on the business owner though, you know your family way better than anyone, if you are pretty sure they can be trusted and are more than qualified for the position, you can hire them. I have seen several cases where family members have destroyed various businesses, cause they feel they should have equal rights as the actual business owner.

In as much as the family member is qualified and capable, I prefer to have family members and friends

Running business with family is so tricky, you have to make sure that the family who join business with you have the same idea about your business ( how to build it, expand it). Make sure you told everything about their responsibility and their salary. Even doing business with family member we have to be professional.
